Group 2 Conference Feedback

One by one each of our group members began reading a segment of their choice from their artifact collection. The ones who were not reading listened intently and noted things to bring to the writer's attention for constructive criticism and after the reading we had a group discussion about the piece. This form of peer editing was very effective because we got to work in small groups and each got individual time to improve our writing. We got to take home notes about changes that may be helpful or places where we could add more detail and be more specific.

I was the first one to share one of my artifacts and I was a little nervous about the feedback I would receive. As I read my first segment about my FSU admissions essay I started to notice a few things that needed improvement and after I finished reading I was ready to edit. Being told what I needed to work on was great because it gave me a fresh perspective. For this piece I now know that I will add what I gained from writing it and what I learned about the editing process. The next artifact I shared about was a letter I received from a girl I met in Honduras named Leyli. I was told to expand on the letter itself and my emotions about it and that was most helpful to me. I may add a quote from the letter to give the reader a better feel for what it was about. In my opinion, this process was definitely the most beneficial form of editing that I have been apart of because I got to hear what both my peers and my instructor thought about my writing. I also enjoyed hearing other people's writing because it sheds a new light on the possibilities of new topics and ways of writing that I may not have thought of before.

My conference experience was very beneficial to me. I first learned that I was completing the project correctly. I had had a few doubts, thinking that I was not fully understanding what we were supposed to write about. The conference also gave me new ideas to possibly talk about. Hearing someone write about their favorite childhood book made me think about mine and whether it could be an artifact worth writing about. The most useful part of the conference was the feedback we each got on our own paper. Starting by reading it outloud and asking yourself what we could change. This was something I had never done before and it really helped me notice things that made sense to me but would probably not to the reader. Then hearing what Mr.Cirio and the other members of the group had to say was even more foreign. I had never been given tips on what to add or take out before. In high school, the only peer editing we did was for grammar. Having four other people hear it instead of read it forced them to think about the story itself rather than the grammatical errors, I had to find those myself. They all told me that I needed to elaborate on my assignment for Robin Williams and how I decided on the quote that I chose, I agreed. Overall, my conference experience was very constructive and my paper and future writing will definitely improve because of it.

In my conference I experience that I have a lot to work on when it comes to writing. I have to work on more of the grammar aspect but when it comes to being creative and connecting artifacts to personal experiences I am right on point. In both of the segments I shared to my group I could have been more specific on some of my points to make the narrative flow better. Meeting together as group was very helpful because I could see what my flaws in writing were a lot easier. I need to explain why live performances are more of an experience than just listening to a song in your earphones. Another thing I need to do is talking about a specific time with my family that I listened to “Man! I Feel Like a Woman”. That was most of my useful information, just explaining into more depth than I did.

Before the conference I was not quite sure how it was going to go and what we were going to do. Once we sat down and we started reading our works out loud it made me feel better.  I was the last person to read my work so it was not that bad, and i already knew how the conference worked. I thought the constructive criticism that was given from the group and the notes I received about my work really helped me. It showed me what I needed to edit to make my paper better. I just need to add more of a personal story or specific example of how the one piece of writing effected me. I also should maybe include more details about what I gained from reading them and how the transition from being read a story compared to reading it yourself is completely different. I also was told to possibly include something about how it is easier to write something if you have a base.  I think this is an interesting point that I will most likely include in my final draft. Overall I think the conference went well and the group as a whole gained good edits that will either be taken by the writer or not because we all know what we want our writing to say.
