Journal 1: Community and Writing

The word community can be interpreted in numerous different ways, but I see it as an environment in which people feel at home. Whether it's a neighborhood, workplace, school, or group of people, a community can be described as having a sense of familiarity. It could be something such as being able to ask a neighbor for extra milk, needing guidance on the first day of classes, or friends that always have your back. A community should be welcoming and accepting. Generally, the people who make up these communities have similar interests or common beliefs. I believe that people are a reflection of their communities and are molded and shaped by the influences, good or bad, that surround them as they grow up. A community is a support system which allows individuals to be united with those who they share personal thoughts, ideas, and time with.
Community plays a huge role when it comes to writing, and even more so since the rapid popularity of social media. Society today has a massive impact on writing due to the constant uploading and sharing on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, etc. People have greater access to express themselves through words and pictures now more than ever. It may not be grammatically correct or even logical, but people are voicing their opinions across global communities through writing.  Through writing, and the help of social media, the community you're communicating with is able to be as simple as your own hometown or as vast as the entire world.
